Go to your search box in the 'start' tab and type in '%appdata%' then go to .minecraft folder. Open bin and then open 'minecraft(yourversionhere)' with winrar. Put the downloaded folders in. Finally, delete the 'META-INF' folder and now you can use the mods u downloaded!

First tip

Whenever you play minecraft for the first time, I recommend you to use to minecraft wiki. You will most likely end up dead without the help of it or some YouTube videos in your first night.

So, I'm going to show tell you a tip for surviving your first night.

You are at a deserted land, filled with lots of animals. You can see the sun in the sky, and it's moving slowly towards to west. Make sure you build a house before that happens. Gather up 20 wood from the trees you see nearby. Turn 16 of them into wooden planks by pressing 'E' and putting the wood into your crafting square. You will get 64 wooden planks. Find a suitable place(anywhere) and start building your house by mouse wheeling over to the wooden planks and right clicking on the ground where you wand to build it. It should have a 3x3x3 area so you would not waste too much wood. Now make a crafting bench. Do this by filling up all the crafting squares in your crafting box with wooden planks. Plonk it down in your house. Make some sticks by putting two wooden planks vertically in your crafting square. Now make a wooden pick by right clicking the crafting bench and you should see a 3x3 crafting square. You kinda have to 'draw' out the pick. Do this by putting three wooden planks horizontally at the top and two sticks at the middle and bottom for the pick!

Mine out some stone and you can create a better pick and tools. Check minecraft wiki for lots of details
